A 25-year-old Eden Prairie man is facing multiple charges when he tried to flee police in a stolen car from a Mall of America parking lot and crashed it, killing a passenger in the car.
On Tuesday, Nov. 11, Abdeljabar Sharif was driving a car that was identified as stolen from Minneapolis by a license plate scanner at the entrance to the mall’s parking ramp. On the 8th, the police then attempted to conduct a “high-risk” traffic stop at the West Garage on the P1 floor.
The car escaped police, who were not in pursuit because it was on Mall of America property. Shortly after, the car struck a concrete pillar on the eastbound lane of I-494 from Lindau Lane.
Abdikadir Issack, 23, of Willmar, died in the crash.
Sharif has multiple convictions in the past, including for theft and burglary, according to court documents.
Sharif was injured in the crash and was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment before being arrested. Inside the flashlight Sharif was carrying, police found a plastic bag containing 92 suspected fentanyl pills weighing just over 10 pounds, the criminal complaint said.
At the time of the incident, Sharif had two felony counts pending in Hennepin County and had seven other felony convictions dating back to 2018.He was charged with fleeing a police officer causing death, criminal vehicular homicide, third degree possession, receiving stolen property and fleeing police in a motor vehicle
Sharif is currently being held in the Hennepin County Jail on $500,000 bond. He will make his first court appearance on Monday.
