GREENPORT — A local medical facility was evacuated Saturday after an odor began to permeate the building.
Well Now Urgent Care, located at 446 Fairview Avenue in Greenport, was empty during the event.
At approximately 12:47 p.m., Columbia County 911 dispatched the Greenport Fire Department to the location after a caller reported a gas smell.
Greenport Fire Chief John Onufrychuk, Jr. said staff and patients evacuated the business before firefighters arrived.
Firefighters searched the interior and exterior of the building for the source of the smell.
Onufrychuk said the problem was the roof of the building.
Firefighters located a broken pipe in a heating unit on the roof of the neighboring Aspen Dental business, Onufrychuk said.
Aspen Dental was closed at the time of the incident.
Firefighters shut off the gas to the roof unit.
Onufrychuk said building maintenance crews had been informed of the situation and asked National Grid to be on site.
All firefighters returned to service at 1.31pm
